Anti-Gay Hate Crime Vandalism Under Investigation

Deputies went to the 44200 Block of 10th Street West, Lancaster, at 9:54AM, Sunday, June 26, 2011, in response to a vandalism call.



When they arrived, they found several pieces of anti-gay graffiti spray painted on the walls of three local businesses. The graffiti advocated the killing of gay people.



The suspects are currently unknown and the investigation is continuing.



A hate crime occurs whenever a crime is committed, in whole or in part, because of specified characteristics of the victim. Sexual orientation is one of the listed characteristics (Penal Code section 422.55).



The Sheriff's Department has joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in a joint Hate Crime Human Trafficking Task Force. The mission of this Task Force is to identify hate crimes that should be prosecuted federally.
