During the week prior to the Special Olympics Summer Games, personnel from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department proudly joined athletes and officers from nearly 300 different law enforcement agencies and military personnel to run for more than 1,500 miles. The torch (known as the "Flame of Hope") was used to light the Opening Ceremony cauldron which symbolized the start of the 2013 Summer Games. "Members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are honored to run alongside Special Olympics athletes, as we are all working toward a common goal of providing opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities," said Sheriff Leroy D. Baca, Los Angeles County Sheriff.
The Summer Games Opening Ceremonies were held on Saturday, June 8, 2013, started at 9:45 a.m., at California State University, 1250 Bellflower Boulevard, Long Beach. Law Enforcement Torch Run Director Lieutenant Kimberly Unland encouraged all Southern California Law Enforcement Officers to participate in the Summer Games where it is a true honor to join fellow law enforcement partners in welcoming athletes onto the field and awarding them with their well-earned medals.
