Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Searching for Outstanding Suspect in Malibu

04/20/2012

LOCATION: Malibu Canyon Rd., Between Malibu Crest Dr. and Malibu Knolls Rd., Malibu / VICTIM: Female Black Adult / SUSPECT: 44-year old Michael Kheop, Malibu Resident

SUSPECT DESCRIPTION: 44-year old male Black, shaved head and wearing a blue shirt

On April 20, 2012, at approximately 1:30 PM, a Malibu/Lost Hills Station's patrol unit was travelling northbound on Malibu Canyon Road, in an Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) System vehicle which electronically scans license plates. The ALPR vehicle registered the license plate of a gray Chrysler "Town and Country" van travelling southbound. The ALPR system indicated the van had been reported stolen to the Inglewood Police Department, on April 13, 2012. The patrol unit located the van and followed it as assisting units responded. The Chrysler made a U-turn south of Malibu Crest Drive and pulled to the side of the road on Malibu Canyon Road.

While the deputies were attempting to order the occupants out of the vehicle, the driver began to slowly drive his vehicle forward.

Suddenly, the driver of the Chrysler accelerated toward the canyon's edge. As the Chrysler began to go over the cliff, the female passenger jumped out of the vehicle just before it plunged down the canyon approximately 150 feet below. Several deputies were able to grab on to the female passenger, preventing her from falling down the cliff. The passenger, later determined to be the suspect's wife, was not injured.

When the Chrysler came to rest at the bottom of the canyon, the deputies saw the suspect exit the vehicle and run into thick brush, and out of view. Due to the extremely rugged terrain, the Malibu Mountain Search and Rescue Team were deployed to search for the driver as a Sheriff's Department helicopter orbited overhead. At this time, the driver is still outstanding.

As of 820pm Friday, deputies are still searching, in the dark with LASD K-9's for the suspect.
