Industry Station Honors Fallen Heroes During Memorial Run

Friday, May 16, 2014

The month of May brings a special time each year when the law enforcement community comes together with family members, friends, dignitaries, community leaders, elected officials, and the community to recognize and remember our fallen heroes in special memorial ceremonies locally and throughout the Nation.

This year Industry Station continued this tradition by participating in The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's 2014 Memorial Torch Relay Run.

The Memorial Torch Relay Run -- established in 1976 to honor the memory of peace officers in Los Angeles County who sacrificed their lives in the performance of their duties -- consists of 58 legs of varying distance. It began its non-stop journey from the Sherman Block Sheriff's Headquarters building in Monterey Park and traveled over 300 miles throughout Los Angeles County.

Industry Station deputies received the "Memorial Torch" from Deputies from Walnut / Diamond Bar Sheriff's Station at the corner of Valley Boulevard and Nogales Avenue in the City of Industry. Numerous Industry Station deputies, explorers, and station volunteers escorted the "Memorial Torch" through the ten mile run where it was passed to Deputies from the Pico Rivera Sheriff's Station for the subsequent portion of its journey.

This year's Memorial Torch Relay Run honored the following fallen heroes:

Officer Nicholas C. Lee, Los Angeles Police Department, EOW 03/07/2014

Officer Christopher Cortijo, Los Angeles Police Department EOW 04/09/2014

Sergeant Leonard R. Luna, Jr., Hawthorne Police Department, EOW 07/08/2013.

In addition, historical research has determined that Deputy Adolfo Celis, Constable Anton Harnischfeger, Deputy Constable Anthony B. Couts, Constable John S. Pilcher, Deputy James L. McDermott and Sergeant Raymond C. Willis of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, died in the line of duty between 1883 and 1957.

These names will be added to the Memorial Wall which is located at the Sheriff's Academy.
