On June 14, 2014, Compton YAL hosted a Youth Activities League Open House to kick off the start of the summer program. The event titled "Summer Kick off Extravaganza" was a resounding success with approximately 300 youth and community members attending. The highlight of the event included the dedication of the YAL community garden to community activists Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Hollifield. They were the catalyst for starting the garden by contributing $1000 from the Compton area Chamber of Commerce.
Various vegetable and plants are already sprouting and will be given to YAL participants and sold to the community in the very near future. The ongoing garden program will include recycling, and gardening classes.
Other activities included sporting clinics ranging from tennis and soccer. N.B.A standout Demar DeRouzan of the Toronto Raptors formerly of U.S.C and Compton High School made a guest appearance. He graciously donated 20 basketballs and spoke to the youth about making positive choices.
The Compton YAL Summer Program includes academic enrichment, arts and crafts, field trips, dance, karate, sporting/fitness clinics, snacks, lunch and other fun filled activities. In the weeks since the Open House the Compton participant numbers have reached over 100 youth daily.
