Boat collision in Marina del Rey splits boat in half, 1 boater airlifted. LASD & LACoFD


A boating accident in the Marina Del Rey Main Channel splits one boat in half, causing 1 occupant to be air-lifted to a local hospital. A reminder to take extra precaution while enjoying the Marina this Memorial Day weekend.

On Sunday, May 27, 2012, shortly before 8:20 A.M., Marina Del Rey Sheriff Station deputies responded to the Marina Del Rey Main Channel regarding a boating accident involving a motorized vehicle and an outrigger vessel. Upon arrival, deputies immediately began to assist Los Angeles County Life Guards attend to accident victims, extracting one adult female victim out of the water. That victim, a resident of Riverside, was air-lifted to a local hospital where she was treated for her injuries and later released.

Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and treated the remaining accident victims for minor injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed the driver and sole occupant of the motorized vessel, collided with the non-motorized outrigger vessel with 9 occupants on board. Due to the collision, the outrigger vessel was completely split in half.

The driver of the motorized vehicle, Peter Sorrento a resident of Chatsworth, was cited for Failure to Follow Established Boating Rules, which is a violation of California State boating laws.

The Marina Del Rey Sheriff's Station, Boat Operations - Harbor Patrol detail, is responsible for law enforcement on the water and on the docks. Typical calls for service range from enforcement stops for boating law and/or safety violations, to open water rescue and medical emergencies. The unit also works closely with the U.S. Coast Guard, Los Angeles County Lifeguard Baywatch units, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The Marina Del Rey Sheriff's Station - Harbor Patrol Detail understands that holiday weekends are often the busiest boating times during the year, but encourage all boating enthusiast to practice safe boating procedures and observe all boating laws while out in the waters.
