DEPUTIES USE COMMENDABLE RESTRAINT

06/23/2012

Deputies responding to a family disturbance used commendable restraint and relied on less than lethal weapons to take a suspect into custody.

On Saturday, June 23, 2012, at 4:07 P.M., deputies from Walnut / Diamond Bar Sheriff's Station responded to the 600 block of Carole Lane, Walnut, regarding an armed suspect with a knife. The suspect was reportedly holding a knife to his girlfriend's neck during a domestic violence incident.

When the deputies arrived, the suspect had released his girlfriend, but he remained inside their residence. After several announcements over the P.A. System for him to exit his house and surrender, the suspect came out in a threatening manner with a large kitchen knife in his hand. He immediately began yelling at the deputies to shoot him while running towards them in an attempt to goad them into using lethal force.

The suspect was shot with a rubber projectile, striking him in his lower abdomen. After being struck, the suspect finally complied with the deputies orders to drop the knife and lie on the ground. The suspect was taken into custody.

Additional investigation revealed that at one point during the disturbance, the suspect had turned on the gas to his kitchen stove because he wanted to blow up his home as soon as the deputies came in to arrest him.

The suspect was transported to a hospital for his minor injuries. He was booked at the Walnut / Diamond Bar Sheriff's Station. He was charged with Penal Code Sections 245(a)(1), 273.5(a), 664/187(a), 69, and 3056.
