Suspect Arrested

1/16/2013

On Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at approximately 1:23am, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies from the East Los Angeles Station responded to1100 North Alma Avenue, Los Angeles, to investigate an "illegal shooting" call. The suspect's mother told deputies her son, Joel Estrada, discharged a firearm inside their residence after a verbal altercation. Fearing that Suspect Estrada might shoot her, she and others in the residence fled.

Deputies observed the suspect inside the residence and made numerous verbal attempts to have the suspect exit the location, but he failed to acknowledge and comply. The deputies determined the suspect was armed and had barricaded himself inside the location. East Los Angeles Station detectives, Special Enforcement Bureau, Crisis Negotiations Team, Aero Bureau, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department were notified and responded to assist patrol deputies with the barricaded suspect.

Station Detectives obtained a search warrant for the residence, which was served by Special Enforcement Bureau personnel. Prior to entering the location, deputies from the Special Enforcement Bureau deployed gas, which resulted in a structure fire. On scene fire department personnel quickly extinguished the fire. The suspect was not located during the subsequent search of the residence; however, evidence of a firearm being discharged in the home was recovered. No Department personnel or community members were injured.

On January 17, 2013, at 12:01pm, we received information regarding the whereabouts of Suspect Estrada. He was taken into custody without incident in the 3100 block of Wabash Avenue, Los Angeles, regarding the illegal shooting. No weapon was recovered. In December of 2010, Suspect Estrada was convicted of a felony for possessing narcotics. Due to this conviction, he is not permitted to possess a firearm. He was booked for 246.3(A)PC, Willful Discharge of a Firearm with Gross Negligence and 29800(a)(a)PC, Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He is being held on $35,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 8:30am in East Los Angeles Court.
