Industry Sheriff’s Station Deputies participate in the Los Angeles County Peace Officers Torch Run for Special Olympics

June 05, 2013

On Monday, June 3rd, 2013, Deputies from Industry Sheriff's Station participated in the annual Peace Officers Torch run for the Special Olympics. Industry Station deputies received the "Flame of Hope" from the Whittier Police Department at the corner of Colima Road and Mar Vista Avenue in Hacienda Heights. The Torch, known as the "Flame of Hope," will be used to light the Opening Ceremony cauldron which symbolizes the start of the 2013 Summer Games.

Numerous deputies and station volunteers escorted the "Flame of Hope" through the ten mile run where it was passed to Deputies from Walnut / Diamond Bar Sheriff's Station for the subsequent portion of its journey.

"Members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are honored to run alongside Special Olympics athletes, as we are all working toward a common goal of providing opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities," said Sheriff Leroy D. Baca, Los Angeles County Sheriff.

The public is encouraged to come out and support the runners and athletes as the torch passes by.

What is the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR)?

Thirty-one years ago in Wichita, Kansas, a small group of police officers convinced their Chief, Richard LaMunyon, to honor Special Olympic athletes and raise money by running with the Special Olympics torch. Since that day, law enforcement officers around the world have remained guardians of that flame and raised millions of dollars in support of athletes with intellectual disabilities. Last year the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics raised over $42 million.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run today is much more than running with the flame. Dozens of events have been created to not only raise money, but raise awareness. Such as: Tip-a-Cop, Polar Plunge, Over-the-Edge, Marathons, Plane Pull, and Chili Cook Offs.

The Summer Games Opening Ceremonies will be held on Sat.-Sun. June 8-9, 2013, starting at 9:45 a.m., at California State University, 1250 Bellflower Boulevard, Long Beach. http://www.sosc.org/summergames

Law Enforcement Torch Run Director Lieutenant Kimberly Unland encourages all Southern California Law Enforcement Officers to participate in the Summer Games where it is a true honor to join fellow law enforcement partners in welcoming athletes onto the field and awarding them with their well-earned medals.
