UNITS & LOCATIONS OF ASSIGNMENT
Every Sheriff's patrol station has a Uniform Reserve unit. In addition to Sheriff Station assignments, Reserve openings are available to those with suitable skills and experience in the following specialized units:
> Aero Bureau > Communications/Fleet Management
> Custody Company > Detective Bureau
> Special Victims Unit > Emergency Operations Bureau
> Headquarters Company > Narcotics Company
> SEB Marine > SEB Medical
> Transit Services Bureau Motors > Transit Rail Operations Center
> Weapons Training Company > Search and Rescue
> Mounted Search and Rescue > Mounted Enforcement Detail
> Reserve Task Force > Reserve Integrity Unit
REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A RESERVE DEPUTY
> Be a United States Citizen.
> At the time of appointment, be at least 20 years of age.
> Be a high school graduate or equivalent.
> Posses a valid California Class "C" Driver's License or higher.
> Be gainfully employed or a full time student.
> Be available to attend the Sheriff's Department Reserve Academy:
> North Academy (College of the Canyons) OR South Academy (STARS Center)
> Be willing to subscribe to oath of affirmation of allegiance for public employees.
> Be in good physical condition, free from disease or defects that would interfere with the satisfactory performance of the duties of this position. [ More on physical requirements can be found at the LA County Class: http://bit.ly/15RfNka ]
> Pass our thorough background investigation, which includes but is not limited to:
> Fingerprint search, Polygraph examination, and Psychological examination
DISQUALIFYING FACTORS: include but are not limited to: Any felony conviction, Job related misdemeanor convictions, certain serious traffic convictions or patters of traffic violations.

RESERVE LEVELS, TRAINING & AUTHORIZED ACTIVITIES
The California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) has established three levels of reserve peace officers:
LEVEL III RESERVE
Authorized Activities: Level III Reserves may perform specified limited duties, and other duties which are not likely to result in physical arrests. They must be under the immediate supervision of a Designated Level I Reserve Deputy or a Full-time Deputy. They are granted peace officer powers only while on duty.
> Academy Training: Level III module is 217 hours.
> Field Training: None required.
> Continuing Professional Training: 24 hours every two years.
LEVEL II RESERVE
Authorized Activities: Level II Reserves participate in general law enforcement assignments such as patrol, mounted posse, search and rescue, and detectives. They work under immediate supervision of a peace officer who has completed the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Regular Basic Course. They hold peace officer status while on duty only for the duration of their assignment.
> Academy Training: Completion of Level III module. Level II module is 260 hours.
> Field Training: LASD requires completion of a 400 hour Field Training Program.
> Continuing Professional Training: 24 hours every two years.
LEVEL I RESERVE
Authorized Activities: A Level I Reserve is available to work in virtually all aspects of the Department. After becoming field qualified, a Level I can work patrol alone or with a Regular or Reserve partner and has peace officer status while on duty only for the duration of their assignment.
> Academy Training: Completion of Level III and Level II modules. The Level I module is 344 hours.
> Field Training: LASD requires completion of a 400 hour Field Training Program.
> Continuing Professional Training: 24 Hours every two years.
LEVEL I-D RESERVE
Authorized Activities: A Level I-D Reserve, after becoming field qualified, additionally has 24-hour peace officer status.
> Continuing Professional Training: 24 hours every two years.
> Uniforms and most equipment are provided by the Department.
> Training is conducted at our STARS Center in Whittier, or at the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita.
