Classification personnel conduct interviews of all new inmates with the primary goal of assigning a classification-security level to each inmate for housing. Classification conducts over 170,000 interviews annually and also identifies inmates for transfer and rehousing from downtown jail facilities to the Pitchess Detention Center. More than 100,000 inmates are transferred annually to other Los Angeles County Jail facilities. Additionally, Classification is the central point for identifying inmate special handling. Over twenty percent of all inmates in custody require some type of special handling precaution. The Re-Classification Detail has the responsibility of reviewing an inmate's security level and adjusting the security level as needed based on documented criteria.
