West Hollywood Station Personnel Participate in Denim Day

04/26/2014

Representatives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's West Hollywood Station gathered in their denim jeans on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at West Hollywood City Hall to participate in "Denim Day" to raise awareness about rape and sexual assault.

Photographed during their #DENIMDAY photo opportunity were Sergeant Klaus, Lieutenant Smith, WH Public Safety Commissioner Desiree Sol, Deputy Hatfield, Captain Honings, Deputy Hodgkinson.

Denim Day, which takes place annually, is an international day of awareness about sexual violence. Denim Day was founded following a court ruling in Italy in 1999 in which a rape conviction case was overturned with the argument that, because the victim had been wearing tight jeans at the time of the assault, she must have been expressing consent.

In the City of West Hollywood, recognition of Denim Day is organized each year by the City's Public Safety Department in the spirit of uniting against sexual assault; to break the silence about sexual violence; and to stand up in support of survivors.

There is a lobby display at West Hollywood City Hall, located at 8300 Santa Monica Boulevard, to educate the public about Denim Day and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, which is in April. City Hall visitors are taking "selfie" photos in front of a Denim Day backdrop and posting them with the hashtags #denimdayweho and #denimday.

If you or someone you care about has been a victim of sexual assault, domestic violence or stalking, there are resources to help. Contact the Los Angeles County Rape and Battering hotline 24 hours day at (310) 392-8381.
