West Hollywood Station runs the Memorial Torch Run.

05/20/2014

The Memorial Torch Relay Run was established in 1976 to honor the memory of the brave and dedicated peace officers in Los Angeles County who sacrificed their lives in the performance of their duties.

The run, which consists of 58 legs of varying distance, will begin its non-stop journey from the Sherman Block Sheriff's Headquarters building in Monterey Park and travel over 300 miles. Approximately 75 runners will start off the relay at Sheriff's Headquarters and run 4 miles to East Los Angeles Sheriff's Station and hand off the torch. The Memorial Torch will pass each of the mainland Sheriff's stations over the course of three days. Nearly 2,000 runners will participate in the relay.

These photos document Team West Hollywood's run today, that started at the West Hollywood Station and ended in Malibu, on the beach.

This year's Memorial Torch Relay Run honored these fallen heroes:

Officer Nicholas C. Lee, Los Angeles Police Department, EOW 03/07/2014

Officer Christopher Cortijo, Los Angeles Police Department EOW 04/09/2014

Sergeant Leonard R. Luna, Jr., Hawthorne Police Department, EOW 07/08/2013.

In addition, historical research has determined that Deputy Adolfo Celis, Constable Anton Harnischfeger, Deputy Constable Anthony B. Couts, Constable John S. Pilcher, Deputy James L. McDermott and Sergeant Raymond C. Willis of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, died in the line of duty between 1883 and 1957. These names will be added to the Memorial Wall.
