Tips For A Safer Holiday Season

:Tips for a safer holiday season.

The deputies of Walnut/Diamond Bar Station would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season. We know that over the next few weeks, people will be hurrying from store to store buying gifts for friends and loved ones. With this in mind, we would like to offer some helpful tips to make your gift buying efforts safer and more secure:

Try to shop during daylight hours if possible or shop with a friend or family member. When you park your car, take note of where you are in the parking lot and remember to secure your doors and windows. Don't make it easy for thieves by leaving valuables and packages in plain view. Lock them in your trunk if possible or try to hide them from view.

When you are shopping, try not to carry large amounts of cash. If you choose to use an ATM, choose a well-populated area and shield your PIN # from the view of others. Pay for purchases with a credit card when possible. Call your bank or credit card issuer immediately if your cards are lost or stolen. If you are carrying a purse or wallet, pay extra attention, especially in crowded shopping areas.

As you return to you vehicle, take a moment to be aware of your surroundings. Try not to carry too many packages at one time. You want to be able to see clearly and move quickly when necessary. Be cautious when people approach you for any reason. This time of year brings out the con artists who will use various tricks to distract you and steal your items.

Finally, when you are at home, try not to display your gifts in an area that can be viewed through a window or open entry door. Be extra careful to lock your doors and windows when you leave the house and consider using lights on timers to give the impression someone may be home. Try to have your packages delivered at a time when you are home or arrange for a friend or neighbor to pick up your packages, because thieves are looking for packages left outside and unattended. If you will be away from home for a long period of time, remember to stop mail and newspaper deliveries and call or visit Walnut/Diamond Bar Station to have vacation checks done while you are away.

These are just a few tips to help you enjoy a safer and happier holiday season!!!
