LA County Sheriff McDonnell Awards #LASD West Hollywood Deputies with Lifesaving Medal
On Wednesday, March 25, 2015, Sheriff McDonnell honored 29 Sheriff's Department personnel and one U.S. Forest Service Firefighter during the 2015 Lifesaving Awards Ceremony. The Lifesaving Award is presented to employees or reserve members of the Department whose actions result in the saving or preservation of a human life that otherwise would have expired without the employee's direct involvement.
During the ceremony, West Hollywood Deputies Jill Gardner and Sergio Venegas received the award for rendering first aid to a motorcyclist involved in an accident until paramedics arrived.
On the early morning of July 20, 2013, Deputies Gardner and Venegas, assigned to West Hollywood Station, responded to a traffic accident involving a limousine and motorcycle. Deputy Gardner immediately assessed the condition of the motorcyclist. She recognized the rider was losing a lot of blood quickly and saw the rider's left foot appeared to be served just above his boot. Deputy Venegas retrieved gloves, towels and scissors from the patrol car. Deputy Gardner cut off the motorcyclist's pants and immediately realized the condition was far worse than she initially assessed. Deputy Venegas applied blood coagulant to the rider's hemorrhaging leg as Deputy Gardner aligned the rider's foot in order to stop the bleeding. The bleeding continued despite their efforts. Deputy Gardner feared the rider would bleed to death so she applied battlefield tourniquet to the rider's leg and held the rider's foot until the bleeding was under control.
Los Angeles County Fire paramedics arrived and Deputy Gardner informed them of the life threatening injuries. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital.
The application of the tourniquet and "Quick Clot" saved the rider from bleeding to death. The emergency doctor stated the first aid application by deputies in the field resulted in saving the motorcyclist's life, not just his leg.
