On April 9 through April 12, 2016, Deputies Miquel Orellana and Deana Austin chaperoned three Avalon School teenagers to a renowned, four-day, Youth Leadership Academy in Anaheim. Over three hundred teenagers from throughout the state of California and beyond attended the event, which was sponsored by CAL-PAL (California Police Activities League) in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Youth Foundation. Our students represented Avalon in an exemplary manner. Deputies Orellana and Austin were extremely proud of the efforts our students put forth. Our students learned about the value of networking, building relationships and developing leadership skills. In addition to participating in a structured program, our students were able to spend time enjoying themselves at Disney Land, California Adventures and swimming in the hotel's pool. The students will build upon their newfound skillset and develop a community-based program in the near future under the deputies' tutelage.
The students who were selected to participate in the Leadership Academy and represent the city of Avalon appear in the attached photograph, from left to right; Daniela Zendejas, Maria Leyva and Jose Zavala.
Congratulations to all three of these promising teenagers!
