June 6, 2016

On Monday, June 6, 2016, Walnut/Diamond Bar station personnel joined an estimated 4,000 officers and Special Olympics athletes throughout Southern California as they participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the event which is part of an international effort to raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics.

Participants from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies as well as military police are known as the "Guardians of the Flame." These runners carry the "Flame of Hope" throughout the Southern California area traveling approximately 1500 miles through 200 communities. This year's journey concludes at California State University, Long Beach on June 11, 2016, where the torch will be carried into the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Special Olympic Games.

Runners from the Walnut/Diamond Bar station began their 4 mile portion of the relay at the intersection of Fairway Drive and Valley Blvd in the City of Walnut. The participants continued east on Valley Blvd until they reached the Pomona Blvd in the City of Pomona, where the torch was passed to runners from the Pomona Police Department.

The Special Olympics was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver. It has grown into the world's largest organization for intellectually disabled athletes. The organization involves an estimated 4.2 million athletes as well as approximately 1 million coaches and volunteers.
