Safe and Sane Fireworks

During the July 4, 2012, holiday, we are hoping residents will have a good time with their neighbors and enjoy "Safe and Sane" fireworks. "Safe and Sane" means the

fireworks are less likely to cause injury and, generally, will not explode or fly; however, they are still dangerous, especially for children. Any child using "Safe and Sane" fireworks should have adult supervision. "Safe and Sane" fireworks are identified by a State of California or State Fire Marshall registered logo on the firework or on its packaging.

"Safe and Sane" fireworks are only sold at city of Carson-approved locations. Beware of individuals selling fireworks from their homes or cars, even if they say "Safe and Sane," because they are not. Fireworks purchased in Mexico or originating in China are almost always illegal. Examples of illegal fireworks are M-80's, bottle rockets, firecrackers, roman candles, and mortars. Violators may be arrested or fined for use of these illegal fireworks. The fines for possessing, selling, displaying, or exploding any illegal fireworks ranges from $500 - $1000. Furthermore, any resident who allows any person to discharge and/or possess illegal fireworks is subject to the same civil liability or criminal penalty.

In addition, fines can be imposed even when using "Safe and Sane" fireworks. This can happen when individuals modify these "Safe and Sane" fireworks by various means. Fines for improperly igniting "Safe and Sane" fireworks range from $100 - $500.

"Safe and Sane" fireworks can be purchased and used beginning at 12:00 noon on June 28, 2012, and ending at 12:00 midnight on July 4, 2012.
