#LASD Helping Incarcerated Women in Century Regional Detention Facility
On Thursday, September 22, 2016, a collaboration of the Los Angeles
County Sheriff's Department's Community Transition Unit (CTU), Education
Based Incarceration Unit (EBI @EBILasd), and Health RIGHT 360, allowed
50 service representatives into the Century Regional Detention Facility
(CRDF) for a provider fair.
The fair provided incarcerated females access to information on community
based programs such as substance abuse rehabilitation services and
religious based services. The EBI Unit offers over 20 educational and
vocational programs to the inmates at CRDF. In addition, CTU provides
many post-release services such as substance abuse treatment and
temporary housing. The inmates were provided information on resources
available to them such as housing alternatives, shelter and possible job
opportunities upon their release. The fair also gave them an opportunity to
communicate with providers about their specific needs. Then upon their
release, they will have a plan to move forward in their lives without having
their incarcerated time controlling their thoughts. Like clockwork; staff
escorted groups of clients to speak with the various providers.
The eagerness and interests expressed was very positive as each client was
attentive to what the provider representatives of the providers had to offer.
After their time speaking with the providers, the clients returned to their
rooms with a knowledge of the resources available. Now, with their
knowledge of available resources, it's their decision how they want will use
them when they transition back into the community. Provider fairs are held
quarterly to help reduce recidivism. HealthRIGHT 360's Family Services
Coordinator and Transitional Coordinator will work with CTU personnel
coordinate their release, so the clients will be released during business
hours and to ensure the clients will be met by the providers who attended
the fair. This will allow for a smoother transition back into the community.
Approximately 260 inmates participated in this event and with 50 volunteers
on hand, it displayed the importance of the collaborative effort between the
Sheriff's Department and the community to help prevent recidivism.
"Alternatives, aspirations and opportunities create productive communities
and we want to give that to the people under our care," said EBI Deputy
Tammy Sherman.
Health RIGHT 360 created a network of providers called the Sherriff's
Community Alliance. The alliance is comprised of communities and faith-based
organizations with existing funding sources dedicated to providing a
seamless continuum of care for inmates being released.
