CITY OF AVALON RECOGNIZES BEAR PROGRAM GRADUATES

9/28/2016

At this week's City Council Meeting, Mayor Ann Marshall graciously awarded twelve Avalon youth with Certificates of Completion for successfully participating in Avalon Station's newly implemented Bear Program. The Bicycle Education and Registration (BEAR) Program was brought to Avalon a few months ago by Deputy Ken Yanecko. Ken created and implemented the same program in Los Angeles County several years ago and the program became a national success. The program involves five instructional sessions during which students learn bicycle repair skills, safe bicycling practices, the importance of good citizenship, and at the end of the program each student gets to keep the bicycle they worked on. Additionally, for his efforts in bringing this program to Avalon, Deputy Yanecko was commended by the Director of the Sheriff's Youth Foundation on behalf of Sheriff Jim McDonnell.
