Is your home ready for a vacation?

06/15/2017

Now that schools out and the sun is shining bright there is no better time than now for a well earned family vacation! You made reservations, packed the car, and are ready to hit the road but is there anything else that you may have forgotten? Burglars look for tell tale signs of vacant homes. Before leaving on your vacation, make sure your house looks lived in. Have friends or neighbors pick up your mail and newspapers and arrange for someone to take care of your lawn. Make sure the person watching your home opens and closes your curtains and shades from time to time. Drawn curtains and closed shades during the day and open at night usually indicate no one is home. Use timers at various locations throughout the house for lights and radios. Don't help a potential burglar by leaving tools in the backyard. Lock those items up in the garage. Make sure you lock all your doors and windows, including second story windows with high quality locks. There are a number of secondary locks available for use on all types of windows at any hardware store. Don't forget to lock the garage doors. Put a bolt type lock on the inside of your overhead garage door and lock it with a padlock. The connecting door from the garage to the house should be a solid core door and have a high quality deadbolt lock. Alarms and camera systems are a really great and affordable way to add extra eyes to a seemingly empty home. Many burglaries are crimes of opportunity, but if you are smart and take away the opportunity for a crime to happen, then you reduce your chance of being a victim.
