Safe Drug Drop-Off Program

January 20, 2010

Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station "Safe Drug Drop-Off Program" provides a drop-off site for the safe disposal of unused and outdated prescription medications. This program started back in October of 2009, when Lomita Sheriff's Station was the first Sheriff's Station to offer this service. Since then this program has been expanding throughout various Los Angeles County Sheriff's Stations. Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, in conjunction with the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and the city officials of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Malibu, Westlake Village and the unincorporated station jurisdictions of Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station, urge you to utilize this safe method of disposal for medicinal waste.

Three secured white colored "mailboxes," located near the front entrance to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station, will serve as drop-off containers for old prescription medications, syringes, and miscellaneous pharmaceuticals. Anyone may drop off these types of substances at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station, 27050 Agoura Road, Agoura, CA 91301, on a 24-hours basis. Drop-offs are anonymous and are not intended for commercial disposal.

The Sheriff's Department is providing this program to ensure that residents have a safe way to dispose of these items without resorting to flushing medications and other medical debris down the drain. Flushing these medications into the water supply results in the virtual contamination of our water systems and threatens all of the ecosystems that rely on a clean water supply to exist. Wastewater treatment plants are not able to test or treat for pharmaceuticals, thus these types of contaminants could end up in our water supply unless they are disposed of properly.

Saving unused or expired medications can also pose a danger to small children who may needlessly find and swallow these products. These medications can also fall into the hands of unscrupulous persons who may in turn sell them on the illegal drug market.

Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station Captain Joseph Stephen, urges our citizens to safely and conveniently dispose of these unused medicinal items and demonstrate their environmental responsibility.
