Eighteen female and 26 male Deputy Sheriffs, and two male Police Officers from the La Verne and Montebello Police Departments, graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Training Academy in Whittier during ceremonies held on Friday, February 21, 2014, at East Los Angeles College. Department Chair, Professor Patrick Hauser, Administration of Justice Department of East Los Angeles College, delivered inspirational remarks to the graduates and their guests.
In an interesting twist, Professor Hauser, who was the graduation's keynote speaker, was also once a member of the Sheriff's academy staff. Professor Hauser spent four years as at the Sheriff's Training Academy and Regional Services (STARS) Center, directly staffing seven recruit classes and three Custody Assistant classes. Professor Hauser titled Deputy Hauser at that time- spent 14 years as a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff, retiring in 1998. Including his involvement with other recruit classes during his time as academy staff, Deputy Hauser was involved directly and indirectly in the training of approximately 1,400 recruits during his career.
As part of the graduation, a badge-pinning ceremony was conducted, with the new Deputies and Officers receiving their badges from a family member or loved one. After receiving their graduation certificates, the graduates were officially sworn in as peace officers by Sheriff John Scott.
In a special segment of the ceremony, Deputy Michael Kim of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was named the Honor Recruit. This award is given to the recruit who achieves the highest numerical average based upon leadership qualities, academics, marksmanship, and physical performance throughout the training period. Additionally, Officer Robert Josett, of the Montebello Police Department, was acknowledged for graduating with the highest academic scores.
