From June 2nd through August 16th, 2014, The Sheriff's Youth Foundation will be providing over 900 summer meals and snacks for the children in the Youth Activities League (YAL) Centers in the Florence-Firestone, Compton, Marina Del Rey, South Whittier, Palmdale, Val Verde, Temple, Walnut, and West Hollywood areas.
These meals are federally funded from the National School Lunch Program, which assist public and nonprofit schools and other agencies in providing nutritious lunches to children at free or reasonable prices. It also benefits the children by providing nutritious meals that contains one-third of the recommended daily allowance; thus, enhancing their overall performance both mentally and physical by eating a healthy meal. Nationally, The United States Department of Agriculture is responsible for overseeing this program.
"A lot of these kids are not used to a balance meal and this fantastic program provides them with a good start," said Sergeant Anthony J.Rotella, Executive Director of the Youth Activities League.
Sergeant Veronica De La Rosa, who works at the Century Station Youth Activities League, says the center serves over 420 lunches every day and has received positive response from many of the parents and children.
The Youth Activities League was established in 1991, in response to the alarming rise in gang related homicides, assaults and drug trafficking. It's designed to provide sports activities to at-risk children as an alternative to criminal behavior. Today, the Youth Activities League has expanded to other activities such as camping, tutoring, college preparation classes, as well as a variety of educational classes.
There are 17 Youth Activities League throughout Los Angeles County. Their operating hours are from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. which is a crucial time when parents are usually still at work.
