A local Pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in the desert near Fox Airfield Tuesday morning
Shortly before 9AM Tuesday (September 4, 2012) Lancaster Sheriff's Station received a call of a plane crash near 40th Street West and Avenue F. Deputies located the plane in the open desert east of the Airfield, approximately 100 yards south of avenue F.
The pilot Lorene Cangiano, a resident of Aqua Dulce, told the deputies that she had just taken off from the Airfield, when the engine of her 1978 Piper Cherokee Six started to fail. She said she was attempting to fly the plane to the east end of the Airfield and safely land, when the engine completely failed. Having no other options, Cangiano said she made an emergency landing in the desert. She said the plane landed fine, however, due to the rough terrain, the plane tipped forward and came to an abrupt stop. She said it was all very smooth and she was not injured at all. The plane suffered minor damage only.
The cause of the plane's engine failure is still under investigation.
