The Palmdale and Lancaster Sheriff's Stations want to congratulate the 39 class participants of the 27th Community Academy. A graduation ceremony was held last night where the participants of the class were honored by dignitaries from Supervisor Antonovich's office, the City of Palmdale, the City of Lancaster, and the Captains of Palmdale and Lancaster Sheriff's Stations.
The Community Academy program is an eleven week program designed to provide participants with an inside look at the Sheriff's Department and the various aspects of the law enforcement mission as to how it interacts with the criminal justice system.
Participants receive lectures on topics including ethics, our Department's Core Values and our Mission Statement. The program also discusses areas such as the use of deadly force, patrol procedures, communications, narcotics/gang education, community-policing, Traffic Operations, Arson Explosives, and a number of other aspects of the duties of the Sheriff's Department.
Each of the participants also does an eight hour "Ride-a-long" with a patrol deputy, a tour of the North County Correctional Facility, and assumes the role of a Deputy Sheriff during staged scenarios.
The participants of Community Academy Class 27 included community members from every area of the Antelope Valley as well as commuters traveling from as far as North Hollywood. The next Community Academy is slated to begin in the spring of 2013 and announcements about the class will be released after the first of the year.
