In 2011, Los Angeles Dodgers legend Maury Wills partnered with the Avalon Sheriff's Station Youth Activities League (YAL).
Mr. Wills came to know Avalon Sheriff's Station personnel through his good friend and Avalon Sheriff's Law Enforcement Technician, Gary Pfahler. He plays golf with local community members and also attends Avalon Sheriff's Station functions.
Mr. Wills attended the 2011 Catalina Gold Star Dive which is the Avalon Station YAL primary fund raiser and donated baseball related items to help raise money for the YAL. The 2012 Catalina Gold Star Dive will be held on Saturday, July 21, at the Casino Point Dive Park in Avalon on Catalina Island. For more information on participating in the dive, you can go to www.catalinagoldstardive.org.
Mr. Wills played shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1959 to 1966 and again from 1969 to 1972. Mr. Wills is credited for reviving the stolen base as part of baseball strategy. He had 586 stolen bases in 1942 games. He is currently a member of the Dodgers organization as a representative of the Dodger's Legends Bureau.
