Graduate Sheriff's Academy - 17 Reserve Sheriff's Deputies & Police Officers from Six Policing Agencies



Seventeen Reserve Sheriff's Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. and Reserve Police Officers from the Glendale, Glendora, La Verne, Pasadena and Port Hueneme Police Departments, graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Training Academy. The ceremony was held on Monday, August 5, 2013, at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration, Board of Supervisors' Hearing Room. The new officers included seven male Reserve Sheriff's Deputies, as well as one female and nine male police officers.

To prepare themselves to work as reserve officers for their respective agencies and communities, the graduates participated in all-day training classes on Sundays, along with two weekday evening training classes each week. In order to reach various levels of Reserve Officer status, graduates are required to complete 477 to as many as 921 hours of intensive training, the same training that full time peace officers undergo.

After receiving their graduation certificates, the graduates were officially sworn in as peace officers by Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca.

In a special segment of the ceremony, Reserve Deputy Robert Whitney of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was named the Honor and Academic Recruit for Class #129. This award is given to the recruit who achieves the highest numerical average based upon leadership qualities, social relations, practical performance, academics, marksmanship, and physical performance throughout the training period.

Reserve Deputy Sheriffs supplement the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's law enforcement staffing. Like full-time Sheriff's Deputies, Reserve Deputies are professionally trained and duly sworn law enforcement personnel. Since Reserve Deputies have the same powers of arrest as full-time deputies they are required by law to meet the same hiring, background, medical and psychological standards as full-time deputies.

Uniform Reserves are assigned to one of the many Sheriff's Department patrol stations or units and perform general law enforcement duties, including crime prevention, investigation, responding to calls, traffic control, and enforcement of laws.

There are over 150 members of the eight Search and Rescue teams of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who were activated for over 450 search and rescue missions last year, making it one of the most active counties for search and rescue missions in the nation. Reserve deputies and civilian volunteers are supervised by full-time sheriff's deputies.
