JAMES J. HELLMOLD, Assistant Sheriff - Patrol & Detective Operations



James J. Hellmold, a 25-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was recently promoted to Assistant Sheriff by Sheriff Lee Baca. Mr. Hellmold will command all of the Department's Field Operations Regions, Detective Division and Homeland Security Division.

Assistant Sheriff Hellmold joined the Sheriff's Department in 1988. As a deputy, he was assigned to Biscailuz Center Jail and Lakewood Station. During his tenure in patrol, Mr. Hellmold received formal recognition in Long Beach and Bellflower for impacting street crime. He also served as a youth mentor at local foster homes and MacLaren Children's Center.

Assistant Sheriff Hellmold later worked as a media spokesperson and conducted staff duties for the Sheriff's Office. In 2000, he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the East Los Angeles and Compton Stations. He assisted in developing the Department's Long Term Strategic Plan as part of the "LASD2" team and was a sergeant assigned to the Department's elite tactical unit known as Special Enforcement Bureau, at the Canine Services Detail. In 2005, Mr. Hellmold was promoted to Lieutenant, where he served as a watch commander at Compton Station.

In 2007, Mr. Hellmold was promoted to Captain, where he commanded Century Station. During his tenure, the city of Lynwood received "All-American City" honors for historic crime reductions, community development, and the lowest number of homicides in nearly 50 years. In 2011, Mr. Hellmold was promoted to Commander, where he closely inspected jail operations throughout Los Angeles County.

Assistant Sheriff Hellmold holds a Bachelor's Degree from California State University, Fullerton and completed the Executive Leadership Program at Cornell University.

Assistant Sheriff Hellmold has been married to his wife for 19 years. They enjoy snowboarding, wake-boarding, and other outdoor activities with their three sons. His community involvement includes more than 25 years of coaching youth football and baseball, and volunteer work at the Compton Salvation Army.
