Richard J. Barrantes, a 40-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Sheriff by Sheriff John Scott and has assumed command of the Department's Countywide Services. In this capacity, Mr. Barrantes will oversee the Court Services, Detective, Countywide Services, Homeland Security and Transit Policing Divisions.
Assistant Sheriff Barrantes has worked a variety of custody, patrol, detective and administrative assignments as a Deputy Sheriff, Sergeant, and Lieutenant. In 1999, Mr. Barrantes was promoted to Captain and worked assignments at Pitchess Detention Center, South Facility; the Inmate Reception Center; and Medical Services Bureau. In 2003, he was promoted to Commander and oversaw the Inmate Reception Center, Medical Services Bureau and was the Administrative Commander of the Court Services Division. He promoted to Chief in 2007 and assumed command of the Department's Court Services Division. In this capacity, he oversaw a Division of over 1,900 personnel and administered a court security contract of approximately $150 million. Assistant Sheriff Barrantes has implemented numerous changes to improve court efficiencies, such as video arraignments and hearings, Electronic Subpoenas, Electronic Probable Cause Declarations and Electronic Video Visiting and Conferencing for attorney/client meetings.
Assistant Sheriff Barrantes holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and has been a part-time professor at California State University, Los Angeles.
Assistant Sheriff Barrantes resides in the San Gabriel Valley area with his wife and daughter. He is the President of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Athletic Association (LASAA), and has been a member of the Department's soccer team and a participant in the Western States Police and Fire Games since 1978. He also enjoys playing racquetball, soccer, jogging, and analyzing possible investment opportunities in the stock market.
