The Folsom Project

Through a long standing practice, the Lions Club International Volunteers Committee has been collecting, refurbishing and distributing used eyewear to various homeless people within local and national communities. For the past year, inmates at Twin Towers Correctional Facility (TTCF) have assisted the Lion's Club with this program.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Education Based Incarceration Bureau (EBI) provides staff to specifically supervise and guide the inmates participating in this program. This unique project is currently operated in an open area within TTCF. Inmates who volunteer to help clean these glasses, calibrate the type of prescription, and organize the refurbished glasses to be distributed locally here in Los Angeles County, nationally, and overseas through medical missions to third world nations by the Lion's Club.

Inmates within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) have participated in a similar program at Folsom Prison for a number of years, hence inheriting the program name of "The Folsom Project." EBI is continuously working in collaboration with the Lion's Club International to provide special needs inmates with volunteer opportunities through the Folsom Project. This unique program supplies inmates incarcerated at TTCF with donated prescription eyeglasses, as well as other eyewear, where they utilize special equipment to sort, clean, identify and calibrate the type prescription. After restoration, the eyewear is re-packaged for distribution. From there, Lion's Club members pick up the packaged eyewear and ship or deliver them to underprivileged or visually impaired individuals.

Plans are in place to expand this program to the Men's Central Jail (MCJ)the first part of 2013.
