LASSO SCHOLARSHIPLASSO offers scholarships to current employees of the LASD as well as their children or legal dependents who are not previous LASSO scholarship recipients and who are currently enrolled in or plan to attend college or trade/tech school, or will have graduated from high school by June 2014.

What is LASD UniversitySheriff Leroy Baca set up the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department University (LASDU) to help employees earn their Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degrees in an extensive range of fields. LASDU encourages all Department personnel to enhence their personal and professional growth.
Register with LASD UniversityLASD University is open to all city, county, state and federal employees. Some programs include family members. Registration in the LASDU database is required to participate and obtain any tuition discounts offered.
How Do I Get Started?Everything working adults need to know about returning to college in pursuit of an associate, bachelor or master degree.
POST Academy College CreditLASD academy graduates receive 12-15 college credits upon completion. The college credits were earned through East L.A. College, Rio Hondo Community College, the College of the Canyons depending on which academy you attended.
Financial Aid InfoLASDU has negotiated lowered tuition rates with many of their affiliated programs. At this time, L.A. County does not off any tuition reimbursement however most students can receive scholarships, grants and government loans to help cover educational costs.
Veterans & the G.I. Bill The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service after September 10, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. All training programs must be approved for GI Bill benefits. This benefit provides up to 36 months of education benefits, generally benefits are payable for 15 years following your release from active duty. Some service members may transfer their GI Bill to dependents.

Challenge Classes - College Level Exams The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) offers you the opportunity to receive college credit for what you already know. Earn qualifying scores on any of the 33 introductory-level college subject examinations and accelerate your education. The 90-minute exams, which cost $80 each, are administered at 1,700 test centers, and 2,900 colleges and universities.
ASSISTASSIST is an online student-transfer information system that shows how course credits earned at one public California college or university can be applied when transferred to another. ASSIST is the official repository of articulation for California’s public colleges and universities and provides the most accurate and up-to-date information about student transfer in California.
Massive Open Online CoursesA MOOC is a massively open online class – MOOCs are FREE online classes that include all of the components you need to learn away from the traditional classroom. MOOCs usually have strong communities and connect learners with instructors or coaches that can help them master the content.
AccreditationAccreditation is the stamp of approval from independent regional or national agencies. It states that an institution meets standards; that its classes should be accepted by other schools (are transferable); that its degrees, certificates, and licenses are valid; and that its students are eligible for federal assistance.

2014 PERKINS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPThe Jean Perkins Foundation, in partnership with the LASD, created the Children’s Scholarship Fund to provide assistance to the children and step-children of full-time, sworn department members who meet the selection requirements. The Foundation awards college grants of $5,000 per year, for up to four years and a number of one-time grants awarded to the runners-up.
