Parties Rescued from Cliff

12-13-13

On Friday, December 13, 2013, 2 hikers went for a short day hike above Veteran's Park which turned out to be more than they bargained for on this hike.

Both victims decided to go off the marked trail and in the process, not only got lost, but they got stuck in a very steep ravine with nowhere they could go. Neither hiker was prepared for this hike. They did not have any of the proper gear to go out off a trail or any trail.

The victims were able to get a call out to 9-1-1 (very rare to due in the canyons, phones do not work there) advising Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station that they were lost.

Members of the Montrose Search and Rescue team were able to find the victims, with the help of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Airship, who found the victims, stuck on a very small cliff.

Team members were unable to hoist out the victims due to their location. Team members had to rig up ropes and pull the victims up to a trial and helped them walk to safety.

After a 6 hour rescue operation, the victim and rescuers hiked out of the canyon area to the main road where the rescue trucks were.

Both victims were extremely lucky that they were not injured or killed in the location they were found.

They were driven back to their cars to head home after their long ordeal.
