Montrose Search and Rescue statistics for December 2013

December 2013

Crescenta Valley Sheriff Station's "Montrose Search & Rescue Team" is celebrating it's 72nd year.

Originally formed in 1942, the team is comprised of local community members that are sworn reserve deputy sheriffs and high risk volunteer members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

In addition to being certified EMT's, the team has members that are specially trained for underground/mine rescues as well as ice rescues. This results in the team often being called to other counties in California to assist with their rescues.

2013 was the third busiest year for the team in their 72 year history. The team was called into service 95 times, compared to 2012's record high of 113 calls.

Los Angeles County Reserve Sheriff's deputies and many other highly trained and brave rescuers volunteer for $1. a year.

Also, full time rescuers from sheriff's departments and fire departments fly, drive, hike, swim and rappel in to effect rescues on a regular basis. The people who were rescued came from all of the world, yet most were local; none ever expected their lives to be at such risk, or to need to be rescued. Many nearly lost their lives.
