On Friday January 24, 2014, Supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas and Don Knabe officiated over a ribbon cutting ceremony held to dedicate the new emergency/trauma and surgery building at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. In attendance were Congresswoman Janice Hahn and several other city and county officials, patients, former patients, community residents, and health care advocates. "The new hospital emergency/trauma and surgery department is one of the most technologically advanced and also includes new pre- and post-operative areas and a heliport," said DHS Director, Dr. Mitchell Katz. The $300 million project expands the hospital's emergency department to more than 70,000 square feet and is scheduled to open to the public in April 2014.
Under the direction of Cynthia Conner, Liaison Lieutenant from Health Services South, Sheriff personnel and K-9 support were utilized to provide a highly-visible uniformed, public safety presence for the event and ensured that all in attendance were able to enjoy the event with minimal congestion and/or mishaps.
