On February 5, 2014, Reserve Deputy Jerry Hill retired after 34 years of faithful service to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department
Captain Bill Song and Sgt. Burton Brink awarded Reserved Deputy Hill the Department's Distinguished Service Award in acknowledgment and recognition of over three decades of loyal and unselfish service to the residents of Los Angeles County.
Reserve Deputy Jerry Hill began his Law Enforcement career on October 11, 1979, and served the majority of this time with the Crescenta Valley Station, Montrose Search and Rescue Team until his retirement on January 15, 2014. Mr. Hill served as both the Team Sergeant and Team Lieutenant during hundreds of incidents, many which resulted in life saving actions. Reserve Deputy Hill was unanimously voted into the position of Team Captain, where he served with the utmost devotion and integrity from January 1996 to December 1998. During his tenure, Reserve Deputy Hill participated in, or supervised over 480 call outs, and 700 community meetings and training sessions; additionally, he served the communities of La Canada and La Crescenta during 275 patrol shifts and 104 public relations events.
Reserve Deputy Jerry Hill dedicated countless hours, many under severe conditions during arduous mountain rescue calls. Reserve Deputy Hill's selfless commitment to the mission of serving the residents of Los Angeles County reflected great credit upon himself, Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Montrose Search & Rescue are always seeking community members that want to volunteer their time saving lives and reuniting lost hikers with their families. Los Angeles County Reserve Sheriff's deputies and many other highly trained and brave rescuers volunteer for $1.00 a year. Also, full time rescuers from sheriff's departments and fire departments fly, drive, hike, swim and rappel in to effect rescues on a regular basis.
The people who were rescued came from all over the world, yet most were local; none ever expected their lives to be at such risk, or to need to be rescued. Many nearly lost their lives.
