Inter-Agency Drill between Los Angeles County Sheriff's, Fire and Forestry

April 26, 2014

On April 26, 27 and 28th, 2014, members from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Crescenta Valley Station's-Montrose Search and Rescue Team; Altadena Sheriff Station's Search and Rescue Team; Los Angeles County Sheriff's Departments Aero Bureau's -Air Rescue 5, the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team; and the Angeles Nation Forestry's Fire Department joined in on an inter-agency drill put together by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

This 3 day drill was to give all department members from all agencies a chance to work together and share technical knowledge for over the side rescues that included: hoist operations, rope systems, heavy rescues, winch, capstan, litter and air operations from the various rescue helicopters used in those various rescue operations.

The terrain for this operation was a drop-off of over 200 feet over the side of the roadway in heavy brush, off of the Angeles Crest Highway, in the Angeles National Forest.

All teams had to work together by integrating each other's equipment to understand how to work and become familiar with those systems so that when teams arrive on scene, they can work together to rescue parties injured faster so we can save more lives.

Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Reserve Deputy Lou Ferrigno was on hand to assist his Montrose Search and Rescue teammates out on the training. Dep. Ferrigno goes out on the weekend patrols from time to time with Montrose Search and Rescue. (See photos link below)

The Montrose Search and Rescue Team personnel are reserve sheriff's deputies who volunteer their time to help others for $1 a year, and who partner with sheriff's civilian volunteers who volunteer for free. There are over 150 members of the eight Search and Rescue teams of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who were activated for over 450 search and rescue missions last year, making it one of the most active counties for search and rescue missions in the nation. Reserve deputies and civilian volunteers are supervised by full-time sheriff's deputies.

Did you know? There are over 850 LASD reserve sheriff's deputies who work patrol, jails, search and rescue, motorcycle patrol, mounted posse, investigations, and more, as team members of the second largest policing agency in the nation. http://lasdreserve.org/
