10,000 Miles of Hiking at Placerita Canyon Nature Center
If someone told you that they have walked have walked over 10,000 miles what would you think? If you were told that the person was over 80 years old what would you think? Bill Beauer is a well-known and respected resident of the Santa Clarita Valley. He worked as a teacher, coach, and Administrator at four different schools in the Valley. Parks Bureau Sergeant Brian Lendman, while on patrol, spotted Mr. Beauer hiking at Placerita Canyon. Sgt. Lendman recognized Mr. Beauer as the Dean of Students when he was a student at Hart High some 30 years ago. Sgt. Lendman found that Mr. Beauer has hiked 50-60 miles a week at Placerita Canyon since 2011. That works out to over 10,000 miles. Mr. Beauer is well-known to the park staff at Placerita Canyon as attested by Regional Park Superintendent Russ Kimura. Superintendent Kimura said, "Bill has been our eyes and ears out on the trails." Mr. Beauer has reported vandalism, downed trees, rock slides, and other problems on the trails, assisting the park staff. Mr. Beauer retired at the age 60 but has yet to slow down and has no plans too anytime soon. "The most beautiful thing is the sunrise in the morning on the trail" Mr. Beauer stated.
Some of the trails at Placerita Canyon Nature Center have been closed since the Sand Fire and will not be open until the first major rainfall. Something tells me we will be seeing Mr. Beauer all over those trails when they do open.
