Child Falls from Vehicle

02/22/12

On Thursday, February 22, 2012, at 2:44 p.m., Cerritos Station deputies went to Carmenita Road and South Street, Cerritos, regarding a pedestrian versus vehicle collision. When deputies arrived, they saw that three vehicles traveling west on South Street, had rear ended each other just east of the Ralphs driveway. The driver of the lead vehicle said she stopped because a child was lying in the middle of the street.

During the investigation, deputies learned a small child fell from a red Honda as it drove east on South Street and turned into the Ralphs driveway. The deputies were told the child was picked up by an unknown person and given to the female driver of the red Honda, which then fled the scene.

Because a witness (Cerritos resident) gave deputies crucial information, a search was initiated for the child and the vehicle. After a feverous two hour long search, deputies located the child (22 month old boy) and the driver (Mother of the child, Norwalk resident) of the red Honda, at a local hospital. The child was diagnosed with a fractured pelvis, lacerated liver, and lacerations to his arm and was transferred to Long Beach Memorial. At this time, the child is listed in stable condition.

Traffic in the area was disrupted for approximately one hour.

Cerritos Station Traffic Detail will handle any follow-up investigation.
