Commerce Special Problem Team Cracks Down on "Street Racing".

March 5, 2012

On March 5, 2012, East Los Angeles Sheriff's Station personnel along with detectives from the Taskforce for Regional Autotheft Prevention (TRAP) conducted a street racing suppression operation in the city of Commerce. Illegal street racing "crews" are an organized group of people ranging in age from early teens to middle age, and in some cases, older adults. They share a common interest in racing. Their vehicles are often modified for these specific types of events which are held on public streets. They are also opportunists who stage impromptu races on a public street at any suitable location.

The operation was a success and resulted in the issuance of 145 citations for "Knowingly Present at a Speed Contest", a misdemeanor. Two suspects were arrested for engaging in a speed contest, a misdemeanor. One suspect was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. 21 vehicles were towed from the location.
