The City of Lawndale held a "Youth in Government Day" on April 22, 2013, at the Lawndale Community Center and Lawndale Council Chambers. Approximately 40 students from Leuzinger, Lawndale, Hawthorne, Lloyde and Environmental Charter High Schools were able to work alongside personnel from the City of Lawndale and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Students were able to learn firsthand the job duties of each government department.
The students were greeted by United States Congresswoman Maxine Waters who serves California's 43rd District. The Congresswoman spoke to the students about the importance of education along with how the federal government works with city government. The students then met Lawndale Mayor, Harold Hofmann, who spoke to them about the City of Lawndale's operations.
Five of the students were assigned to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department personnel. Personnel explained to the students how the South Los Angeles Sheriff's Station/Lawndale Service Center functions. They were then taken to the Lawndale Service Center and given a tour of the Service Center. The students were shown the Sheriff's Department's emergency response equipment and allowed to try on some of the equipment.
The students participated in a mock city council meeting and then had a luncheon at the Community Center's main event room. The students enjoyed themselves during the "Youth in Government Day."
