4th of July Safety Tips
The Fourth of July is nearly upon us. With that in mind, Lomita Sheriff's Station would like to provide some helpful hints to keep you and your family safe during this time of celebration.
Fireworks are a leading cause of injury and accidental fires during the weeks around the Fourth of July holiday. Not only are fireworks potentially dangerous, but they are also illegal in Lomita Station's patrol area. Anyone using fireworks in the cities or unincorporated areas that we patrol will be subject to arrest and/or fine.
Barbecuing during the summer holiday season is a time honored tradition. It is important that while outdoors barbecuing, people take some simple precautions to make sure their outdoor event doesn't go up in smoke. Keep barbecues at least 10 feet away from flammable materials. This includes structures and any brush. For propane grills, visually inspect lines leading from the propane tank into the grill for leaks before opening the valve on the tank and grilling. And last but not least, always keep a water source or fire extinguisher near your grill in case of emergency.
Let us not forget our furry family members. The noise associated with the Fourth of July can be nerve-racking for pets, as they can have more sensitive hearing and don't understand what the flashes of light and loud noises are and only view those stimuli as potential sources of danger. The ASPCA recommends that during the Fourth you avoid taking your pets to fireworks displays. Instead they recommend that you find a "quiet, sheltered, and escape-proof area at home" to allow your pet to feel safe from the commotion.
The Fourth of July holiday usually sees increased police patrols and checkpoints looking for drivers that may be under the influence of alcohol. Please drink responsibly and have a designated driver or contact a local cab company to make sure you get home safely. Spending time behind bars is no way to enjoy the celebration of our nation's independence.
We at Lomita Sheriff Station hope you have a fun and safe Fourth of July!
