Flowers and Wine Scam

09/07/2013

Would you be a victim of this scam?

You receive a telephone call from a deliver company asking if you will be home in an hour because they have a package that requires a signature. Wondering what the package is and who it is from, you tell them yes.

Approximately an hour later, a delivery man shows up in a work uniform at your front door with a beautiful basket of flowers and a bottle of wine. The delivery man tells you that there is a $3.50 delivery/verification of age charge since there is alcohol involved and there needs to be proof that he had actually delivered the package to an adult of legal drinking age and it was not left on the doorstep where it could be stolen by anyone, especially a minor.

The delivery man shows you a credit card/debit card device that reads a credit card or debit card and you sign on a small screen. He tells you he cannot accept cash and only a card. You use your debit card and punch in your secret pin number without letting the delivery man see what your pin number is. After you enter your information and sign the screen, a receipt is automatically printed from the machine. The delivery man hands you the receipt and wishes you a good day.

Less than a week later, you check your bank statement and notice that $4,000 has been charged/withdrawn from your debit account at various ATM machines.

It appears that the entire delivery was a scam. The device that the delivery man had, stored your debt card number and pin number allowing the suspect to make a fake debit card with all of your information on it, thus withdrawing the $4,000 from your bank account.

Do not be a victim to this type of scam.
