Unsolved Unit

The detectives assigned to the "Unsolved Unit" are the personification of the Bureau's "Bulldog" image. No homicide investigated by the Sheriff's Department is ever closed until it is resolved. Long after the original case investigators may have retired or otherwise left the bureau, every clue or lead is investigated by this unit. It is not uncommon for cases that may have occurred more than 15 years ago to be brought to trial and conviction by the detectives of this unit.

Recently, "Unsolved" detectives prosecuted a murder that was committed in 1974! Outside agencies often request our assistance with follow up investigation of non-assigned homicide cases. We also assist outside agencies in direction and identification of possible concurrent investigative interests.

Another responsibility of our Unsolved Unit is foreign prosecution. We have investigators who specialize in consultation regarding homicide case preparation with foreign authorities. Quite often we help in the filing of criminal charges in foreign jurisdictions. We have the capabilities to put together a Task Force to assist primary investigators in case management. A Task Force may also be used in high profile or serial type cases to assist with clues, some called in from local citizens around the community.
