Fallen Officers Honored and Remembered Although we honor their memory and sacrifice every day, the month of May brings a special time each year when the law enforcement community comes together with family members, friends, dignitaries, community leaders, elected officials, and the community to recognize and remember our fallen heroes in special memorial ceremonies locally and throughout the Nation.
Throughout the month of May, Santa Clarita Deputies will participate in several memorial events in remembrance of fallen comrades at home and abroad. Paying personal tribute to all the law enforcement officers who have given their life in the line of duty and their families who have lost their sons, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, or other loved ones.
This year Santa Clarita Station will continue its tradition of participating in The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's 2012 Memorial Torch Relay Run, which will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 18 and will end on Sunday May20,2012.
Starting in Monterey Park, Ca. at The Sherman Block Headquarters Building, participants will run 24 hours a day covering a course over 300 miles and stopping at all mainland sheriff's stations.
Santa Clarita Deputies portion of the course will begin at Santa Clarita Station on Saturday night and travel east along Valencia Blvd. to Sierra Hwy. and out into Agua Dulce. There they will be relieved by personnel from Palmdale Sheriff's Station.
The memorial touch that the runners carry along the course will ultimately be used by Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca to light the ceremonial flame in the Memorial Park on Wednesday May 23, 2012 at the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's Sheriffs Training Academy and Regional Service (STARS) Center in Whittier, California.
After an historical search, it was discovered that Constable J. Edward Brown (pictured) was the first Santa Clarita Deputy killed in the line of duty on September 14, 1924. Therefore Santa Clarita Station will be running in his honor, as well as in memory of Deputies Arthur Pelino - March 19, 1979, Hagop "Jake" Kuredjiann - August 31, 2001 and Randy Hamson - October 24, 2008.
