This week, we at Walnut-Diamond Bar station bid farewell and a happy retirement to our PM Shift Watch Deputy, Mario Cortez. Mario is retiring after 29 years of exemplary service as a deputy sheriff. He was first assigned to the station as a patrol deputy. Mario did his job well and was soon selected to go to the Sheriff's crime lab, where he became an expert in crime scene investigation techniques. Mario performed his job so well his skills were soon recognized nationally.
Later, Mario decided to return to patrol and assume the position of watch deputy. The watch deputy is an integral part of the station operation. They monitor the calls that are dispatched, assist the public at the front desk, provide additional resources for the field units during emergency situations and assist the watch commander and watch sergeant in maintaining the smooth operation of the station as a whole.
Mario performed all of these duties flawlessly, but we who worked with him knew him as humble friend, unassuming, and an endless resource who was always willing to provide advice or lend a helping hand. Mario never grumbled when asked to work the field when we were short on staff or to head to a crime scene for finger prints if the need was immediate.
In the photo attached Mario was not allowed to sneak away without first receiving a Distinguished Service Award from the Sheriff Department and a plaque honoring his service to the Walnut-Diamond Bar Station areas. Both were presented by the Walnut-Diamond Bar Station Captain Al Reyes.
