Protect Your Car at the Gym

06/23/2017

Those of you that work out at a fitness center should be aware of an ongoing crime trend that is occurring all over Southern California. Criminals have figured out that many people tend to leave their purses, wallets, cell phones, jewelry, and watches under the car seat, in the glove box, or in plain view inside their cars rather than taking them inside the gym or leaving them at home. The criminals wander through the parking lots without drawing attention to themselves taking a quick gaze at the floorboards and back seats. They often carry gym bags and look like they are either coming from the gym or going in. Sometimes, they pretend to be deeply involved in an important phone call as they drift from car to car. A purse strap sticking out from under the seat or a covered item in the car will also get their attention. When no one's looking, they either punch the lock or smash the window and steal the property. It only takes a few seconds.

A more secure alternative to leaving your property in the car is to bring it into the locker room and secure it inside a locker using your own lock. Never leave your property inside a locker with no lock on the outside. Always remember that the lockers are not designed to withstand a lot of force and they can be broken into as well. If available, lockers on the main gym floor are a better option than the locker rooms because they can be seen by other gym patrons.

Remember to not take anything with you that you don't need at the gym. Leave your laptops, watches, jewelry, and tablets at home. Clean out your car before you go to the gym. The only things you need are your keys, driver's license, and gym card. Keep those in your possession by using a small fanny pack or bag while you work out. You should also remember to keep an eye out inside and outside of the gym for anyone or anything that just doesn't look right. If you have any concerns please contact the gyms front desk or contact the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff's Station at (909) 595-2264 to pass along the information.
