With the first day of school upon us, the LASD South Los Angeles Station, would like to share some safety tips with parents of school aged children:
Review your school's handbook for critical information, or contact your school administrators for questions, such as:
o Does the school practice zero tolerance for bullying?
o What emergency plans are in place?
o How often are emergency drills conducted?
o Are visitors allowed on school grounds or in the classrooms?
Have open conversations with your child. Ask them if they have encountered any bullying, if they feel safe, and if they are respected by their teachers and classmates.
Use technology to your advantage.
o Use website filters to block inappropriate websites
o Add parental control apps to your child's phone and computer to track their online and mobile conversations.
o Review kid-friendly wearable tech devices that can help you keep track of your child's location.
Talk to your child about being aware of his or her surroundings. Who to notify if they see something or somebody suspicious, what to do if they feel threatened. If your child walks home, have him or her find a buddy or group to walk home with. There is always safety in numbers.
For those parents who drive their children to or from school, please obey all traffic laws around schools and have patience and respect for the crossing guards, students, teachers, and other drivers. Safety always comes first, even if the other driver is wrong.
This concludes my report and I would be happy to entertain any questions you may have.
