EMT EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN



The Search and Rescue teams function as the Sheriff's Department's official emergency response unit. The unit provides services to those citizens who become stranded, lost, or injured in the mountainous areas of Los Angeles County.

Each team member is selected for his or her physical capabilities, maturity, and willingness to respond at a moment's notice in emergency search and rescue situations. The men and women of the team are trained and ready to respond to virtually any wilderness emergency 24-hours a day.

Team members must hold a current Emergency Medical Technician license and usually must live within fifteen or twenty minute's response time of the station where they serve.

In addition to academy training, Search and Rescue Team members undergo extensive mountaineering training.

SEARCH & RESCUE K-9

Los Angeles Search Dogs (LASD) was founded in 1985 and is an all-volunteer search team for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The Team uses trained dogs to search for lost persons in wilderness and urban areas. The dogs are also trained to search for cadavers in avalanches, collapsed and burned buildings, and also for drowning victims.

Search and Rescue K-9 receive 60-100 calls a year from the Sheriff's Department and other law enforcement agencies and work only for law enforcement agencies, fire departments and the State Office of Emergency Services.

The team is an all-volunteer and on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

EMT EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has been providing trained and certified Emergency Medical Technicians to the citizens of Los Angeles County for many years. Although the program is primarily designed for the Department's eight search and rescue teams, many personnel assigned to other specialized units are also trained as EMT'S. These include the special weapons team, dive team, search dog team, patrol boat teams, beach teams and narcotics units.

Sheriff's Department EMT'S are highly trained individuals who can be mobilized at a moment's notice in the event of any disaster. Most of the personnel are Reserve Deputies, but regular (full-time) personnel are also trained in this intensive program. Each LASD EMT takes and maintains their EMT certification at their own expense.

The training consists of over 100 hours of combined classroom and practical skills. Additionally, every two years, each EMT must undergo a 24 hour refresher course and recertification test of their knowledge and skills, and must always maintain currency of their CPR certification.
