Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Deputies Extinguish Fire Caused by Illegal Fireworks

While patrolling the city of La Canada Flintridge, Deputies Edwin Serrano and Eddie Tsuang received a radio call regarding a firecracker disturbance. In response, they arrived at the 700 block of Flintridge Avenue, where they immediately observed smoke emanating from the back yard of a residence. Grabbing their vehicle equipped fire extinguishers; the deputies quickly extinguished a fire that had begun burning in a bush and grassy area of the yard. Their immediate actions kept the fire from becoming a larger safety issue and may have saved the lives and property of nearby homeowners. While the deputies were just doing their jobs, this incident serves as a reminder of the devastation that can occur from the use of illegal fireworks in the Los Angeles County area.

Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station personnel would like to take this opportunity to remind residents that personal fireworks are not legal in the communities of Montrose, La Crescenta, Kagel Canyon, Big Tujunga, Angeles National Forest and in the city of La Canada Flintridge. Families are encouraged to celebrate and enjoy their Independence Day, however with freedom comes the responsibility to follow firework laws and be conscientious neighbors. No neighborhood would want to be associated with losses from a residential fire caused by fireworks, or from the devastating injuries associated with their use.

The Crescenta Valley Sheriff's station, together with the Fire Department, the City of La Canada Flintridge, and the County of Los Angeles strongly urge residents not to participate or affiliate themselves with use of illegal fireworks this 4th of July. Instead, make plans to attend a pre-arranged, professionally sanctioned event in the community. There are numerous authorized fireworks displays throughout Los Angeles County including the annual Crescenta Valley Fireworks Association's Fireworks Show and Festival at La Crescenta Elementary School. The event will be open to the paying public at 4:00 P.M. and conclude at 10:00 P.M. The firework show is scheduled to commence shortly after 9:00 P.M. The festival will take place at the La Crescenta Elementary School's playground, which is located on the northeast portion of the school property.

Captain David Silversparre of Crescenta Valley Station reminds all residents to have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July.
